Abstract

Beginning reading skills are important to start honing and introducing to preschool-age children, as preparation, especially for kindergarten children so they don’t experience difficulties at the next level of education. This study aims to determine the effect of the phonics method on the initial reading ability og children aged 5-6 years. This reseach is quantitative research, with the type of method used being an experiment in the form of pre-experimental designs with one group pretest-posttest design. In this study, a sample of 30 children aged 5-6 years was used. The data collection technique used was observation and documentation, while the data analysis technique used a paired sample T-test with a significance level of 0.05. The result of the paired sample T test is 13.209 or 13.209 > 2.048, so it can be concluded that the phonics method can affect the ability to read beginning in children aged 5-6 years.
