Abstract

Respiratory health problems are among the public health concerns that require attention through community-based promotive and preventive efforts. Low levels of lung health literacy may affect the community’s ability to recognize risk factors, adopt preventive measures, and seek appropriate healthcare. The LENTERA PARU program aimed to improve community literacy and awareness of lung health through education, lung health assessment, and community health cadre empowerment. The program was attended by 33 people and 6 cadres and was conducted in Payakabung Village, Ogan Ilir, through several stages, including simple screening involving oxygen saturation and smoking status assessment, lung health education accompanied by knowledge assessment using pre-tests and post-tests, and community health cadre empowerment. The results showed an increase in the community’s mean knowledge score from 63.33 in the pre-test to 80.00 in the post-test. In addition, the lung health assessment provided an initial overview of the community’s respiratory health status and served as a basis for increasing awareness of the importance of early detection. Community health cadre empowerment was also conducted to strengthen their capacity to deliver lung health education and support the sustainability of simple screening activities within the community. This community service program demonstrates that an approach combining education, health assessment, and community empowerment can serve as a strategy to improve lung health literacy and strengthen promotive and preventive efforts to address respiratory health problems. Program sustainability through continued involvement of community health cadres and coordination with healthcare facilities is needed to ensure that the benefits of the program can be sustained and applied within the community
