Abstract

Utilising local potential is one way to improve the independence and well-being of rural communities. Specifically, Badak Village, Belik District, Pemalang Regency, has plants that can be cultivated, such as reeds, which are easily found in the surrounding environment. However, they are still not used optimally as products with utility and economic value. This community service program aims to increase the community's knowledge and skills in utilising reeds to make household products such as floor brooms and to introduce this potential as a business opportunity. The activity was carried out under the Independent Community Service Program (KKN) and targeted women cadres of the Badak Village Association. The activity involved observation, identification of local potential, outreach, demonstrations, direct practice, mentoring, and evaluation. This activity provided the community with practical skills to process reeds into useful, economically valuable products, especially brooms. The results of this community service activity showed increased participants' understanding and skills in processing reeds into floor brooms. Participants followed the production stages, from selecting reeds to cleaning by rolling, drying, arranging, tying, attaching handles, and finishing. Participants also demonstrated enthusiasm and interest in developing these skills into productive, marketable activities. This activity showed that utilising reeds can support community empowerment based on local potential
