Abstract

Materi pelatihan mencakup greetings and welcoming guests, handling reservations, giving information and directions, offering help and services, handling complaints, serta tour guide communication.

Abstract
The demand for human resources with English communication skills that meet the requirements of the hospitality industry is increasing as the tourism and hospitality sectors continue to grow. However, English instruction at Vocational High Schools (SMK) often focuses on general topics and therefore does not yet fully meet the professional communication needs of students in hospitality programs. This Community Service (PKM) activity aims to improve students’ English vocabulary, pronunciation, and communication skills through “English for Hospitality” training tailored to the hospitality industry. The program was conducted at SMK Ma’arif 1 Kebumen from April 29 to May 22, 2026, with 10th-grade students in the Hospitality Specialization Program participating. The implementation methods included lectures, demonstrations, drilling, pair work, and role-playing, developed based on the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) approaches. The training materials covered greetings and welcoming guests, handling reservations, providing information and directions, offering help and services, handling complaints, and communicating as a tour guide. The evaluation was conducted through a pre-test, a post-test, observations, and a practical assessment. The results of the activity showed an increase in the participants’ average score from 72.95 on the pre-test to 75.45 on the post-test. The results of the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test showed a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores (p < 0.05), although the normalized gain of 0.09 indicated that the level of improvement was still relatively low. In addition to improvements in cognitive aspects, participants also showed development in affective aspects, such as increased self-confidence, active participation, and courage in using English in guest service situations. These findings indicate that ESP-based English language training tailored to the needs of the hospitality industry can support the development of hospitality students’ communication competencies and enhance their readiness for fieldwork and the professional world.
